The Divine Baze Orchestra: "Dead but dreaming" (2010)

The Divine Baze Orchestra is a Swedish band formed in 2003. After their debut album “Once We Were Born...” in 2007, they returned revitalized in 2011, largely due to the arrival of Oliver EeK as lead vocalist — a change that, having listened to the first record, I sincerely appreciate… to the detriment of the now-absent Alexander Frisborg. There were also changes in keyboards and bass, which makes this version of TDBO musically quite different from before.

What I enjoyed most about this release is its freshness, originality, and sheer boldness in delivering progressive rock. Broadly speaking, it could be labeled as Heavy Prog, but beyond that tag, the Swedes from TDBO navigate various styles with striking ease — from ’70s Art Rock and symphonic rock in the vein of Genesis with Peter Gabriel, to the Canterbury sound of Caravan.

It’s hard for me to single out a particular track, as I’m genuinely captivated by almost all of them. “Origins,” with Oliver’s treated vocals, stands out; “What Mustn’t Be Spoken” carries that distinctive proto-prog and glam rock flavor reminiscent of The Sensational Alex Harvey Band. “The Cellar” sounds very much like Caravan, featuring magnificent rhythmic shifts and once again Oliver’s processed vocals, this time with a slightly sardonic tone.

“Lastly, Lament” reminds me of Black Mountain and, in certain passages or specific interventions, of the Madrid-based band Maroon(Ed). Perhaps the most curious resemblance appears in parts of “Flow/Unity” and even in the aforementioned “Lastly, Lament,” which evoke Andalusian jazz rock bands like IMAN or CAI — especially in the keyboards, very similar to the work of Marcos Mantero.

All in all, this is a fresh, original, and above all lighthearted release, full of continuous shifts and driven by the very distinctive voice of Oliver EeK — all within its evident simplicity.
